Latest: Flock of Friends - Parish Youth Club

Over five months ago, a group of young adults Sinead Kivlehan, Elizabeth Hurley, Conor Hogan, and Orla Kyne from the Good Shepherd parish volunteered to help Siobhain Bradley, Diocesan youth ministry coordinator set up and facilitate a new faith friendly programme for young people aged between12-16 from the parish. This “New Day” programme began on the 1st March and ran every Tuesday evening from 7:30p.m. - 9p.m. in the Castlegar sports complex for seven weeks up until 12th April... The whole idea of this programme was to invite young people to explore the beauty of their own identity, faith and culture, but it also aimed to do more – it challenged the young people to be prepared to step out of their own comfort zone and recognise the Presence of God in every person in our community from whatever faith or ethnic background. Through a variety of workshops, games and activities, this very passionate and energetic group of young parishioners aged 12-16 were been given a safe space to enga...

Latest: Higgens Furniture

In these difficult times, we have got used to daily announcements of job losses and business closures. However, there are many businesses that have seen it all before and have managed to survive, and grow, through previous recessions. One such company is Merlin Park Furniture Centre, which has been in business for almost 40 years and is still going strong despite competition from the furniture mega stores that have sprung up during the "boom" years. In 1972, Martin Higgins lost his job when the factory where he worked closed down. Determined to have more control of his own destiny, Martin decided to be his own boss and established his furniture retail business in Merlin Park. At that time, the Furniture Centre was off the beaten track but, Martin was confident that there was a market for quality furniture from leading Irish manufacturers. His instincts were correct and, due to the quality and value of the products on offer, it soon became an essential stopping point for furniture buyer...

Latest: Why I intend to spend my summer volunteering in Nepal

It was in September of last year, at the annual NUIG Clubs and Socs Day, that I first learned of Draíocht Nepal. Like any other student at the university, I joined up, assuming that I would attend the initial meetings and events, but, with the demands of both study and exams, I would, with time pressure, eventually opt out altogether. Certainly that has not been my experience. From my first meeting I have been won over by the experiences of former volunteers, regaling us with stories of their time in Nepal... From teaching English in the remote mountain schools, and helping build new orphanages and health centres, to showing the kids how a three-legged race is ran; riding on the upper floor of a bus with a goat as co- passenger, &. the whole experience seemed like one giant adventure that was right up my alley! After each meeting, my friend Aoibheann and I, became more and more convinced that volunteering in Nepal, is what we want to spend our summer doing! As the months flew by, b...

Latest: Keeping the traditions far away from homeland

In Galway there is a small but very friendly and active Ukrainian community. We would like to take this opportunity to tell the readers about how we try our best not to forget our native traditions, even at a distance of many thousands of miles from homeland. Unfortunately or rather fortunately, being thousands of miles from our native land, we had the opportunity to meet other Ukrainians, here in Western Ireland's capital city - the city of Galway. For more than seven years, we are friends, and even more - we have become almost like a big family. At the moment, our community consists of seven families, and we all try to abide by all the Ukrainian traditions, acquaint our children with beautiful customs of celebrating the day of St. Nicholas in December, Christmas and Old New Year - "Melanky in January, and Easter in the spring.
